New Zealand Bible Society Church hits Second Life

Several ministries in New Zealand have decided that praying online is cool. The Rev. Paul Stanaway claims that much of his work is done with younger members through texting and plans a website where followers can light a virtual candle or go in a private chatroom for counseling. Rev. Wally Behan streams sermons via his website and claims that he gets thousands of hits per week. Mark Brown of the Bible Society created a cathedral last year in Second Life. Rev. Bosco Peters also has a site with a reported 1000 hits per day and twice that on holidays. We expect that if God truly exists everywhere, she/he wouldn’t mind.

Aceeca Meazura MEZ1500 Handheld

New Zealand’s Aceeca has unveiled their Meazura MEZ1500 that runs Windows CE 5.0 or 6.0. Similar to their MEZ1000 with the same case design and 7-button keyboard, it features a 2.8 x 2.1-inch touchscreen with a 320 x 240p resolution, a Marvell PXA270 processor, and a memory of 64MB of RAM and 32MB of flash. The company claims that it can handle temperatures of 10 to 60º C and can withstand 30 minutes of water 3 ft. deep. At a size of 6.8 x 3.7 x 1.6-inches and a weight of 16.9 oz., you can also order the MEZ1500 with Linux. New Zealander Reinvents the Mouse

Although it hasn’t changed much since its inception in 1964, Grant Odgers in New Zealand built what he believes to be a better mouse. He will be meeting with Microsoft and perhaps Logitech to show off his Swiftpoint. While sketchy on details, apparently the device is held between the thumb and index finger, and can be used with or without a flat surface. This sounds to us pretty close to the description of a pen, and in fact MS may be considering if it can replace those now used with its tablets. The Swiftpoint will make its debut March 4 at the CeBit in Hanover, Germany.

Student Diagnosed with Text-Messagers Thumb

A 20 year-old student in New Zealand has been diagnosed as having the country’s first case of texting tenosynovitis, aka text-messager’s thumb, caused by sending about 100 messages a day from her cell phone. The affliction results in tendons in the thumb becoming inflamed. Only two other cases have been reported from Singapore and Australia, but we can think of plenty of our friends that probably suffer from it but would never admit to it.
